MORE ABOUT THIS CAR...

The E-Type was never designed as a race car from factory and was very much focused on the mass population.  This said, Jaguar at the time of launching the E-type had a long and illustrious history on the track with the C-Type and the D-Type. It didn’t take long before privateers realised that Malcolm Sayers E-Type design lent itself naturally to the track. Backed by the factory a number of well-known privateers were campaigning various Jaguar’s on the track, the most notable being Coombs ‘BUY1’ / ‘4WPD’.

In 1962 ‘4WPD’ was crashed heavily at Goodwood, following this the E-type was rebuilt into what would become the homologated lightweight E-type. With a planned run of 18 lightweights, the factory ended up completing just 12 in period. With original lightweight examples changing hands for near £7,000,000, it was inevitable that there would be a sub-category of enthusiasts who wanted to re-create these iconic cars.

This particular example was manufactured by Zealia Engineering, a company established by Brian Wilkinson, specialising in the recreation of lightweight E-type’s. Mr Wilkinson, originally from New Zealand was instrumental in the development and broad use of roll cages in road, race and rally cars. In 1972, Mr Wilkinson established Safety Devices and then in his later years established Zealia Engineering, becoming a leading authority on lightweight E-types and exacting recreations.

Commissioned by Mr P. O’Brian in roughly 2009, a serial restorer of Jaguar E-type’s, Mr O’Brian having owned in excess of 20 E-types. Sourcing a suitable original right-hand drive donor project, the E-type was stripped and sent to Mr Wilkinson of Zealia Engineering to undertake the modifications for the recreation of a lightweight E-Type with the customer specified de-seamed finish. Finished with aluminium bonnet, hardtop, doorsboot lid and welded in roll cage the car was finished in Audi Aluminium Silver.

The engine was fully rebuilt and uprated, triple Webers were fitted and a 5-speed gearbox fitted. The E-Type was finished with a blue interior and various race featured included, such as exposed fuses and internal cut off switch. The E-type was eventually completed in 2012 and registered on a private number plate of ‘9803 PO’. Following the completion, the E-type was featured in an extensive piece in ‘Jaguar Enthusiast’.

Mr P. O’Brian didn’t hold onto the E-type for long following completing the restoration in 2012. The car past onto Mr P. Kennelly in May 2012 and placed on a private plate of ‘PK 2068’. During Mr Kennelly’s ownership the car was fully set up and professionally tuned to ensure the Webers were running seamlessly, although covering very few miles in his ownership the car was eventually sold in 2014.

E-Type UK first offered the car for sale in 2015, selling the car on behalf of the previous owner. The E-Type was sold to a true classic car enthusiast and covered some 6,000 miles in 3 years. Being used to attend numerous classic car meets and events such as Goodwood Revival, Brooklands and Bicester.

This special E-Type was shown at the prestigious Warren Concours in Essex in 2016 and won Best in Class in the Jaguar category. The car was thoroughly enjoyed and used during its ownership attending and participating in the Hero Events Summer Trial in 2017 and then being shown at our very own Cars, Coffee and Cakes morning. The E-type recently passed to its current custodian, who due to a change in circumstances is now looking to downsize his substantial E-Type collection.

To fully appreciate the level of detail that has gone into this very special lightweight E-Type, it must be seen and driven. A real opportunity to get close to a genuine lightweight as you can get and at a fraction of the price.
