Top 3 Upgrades Owners Are Asking For
The Shift Toward the “Usable Classic”
Across the workshop this year, one trend is becoming increasingly clear. Owners still value originality, but they are also looking for ways to make their E-Type easier to live with and more enjoyable to drive regularly.
Whether it’s longer summer trips, modern motorway traffic, or simply wanting the car to start reliably on a Sunday morning, many owners are asking the same question:
KEEP THE CHARACTER, IMPROVE THE EXPERIENCE
Three upgrades in particular keep appearing in conversations with owners. Each focuses on usability rather than changing the fundamental character of the car.
1. ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION (EFI)
Many original E-Types run carburettors, which are a beautifully simple and period-correct solution. When perfectly set up they work extremely well. However, carburettors rely on mechanical adjustment to control fuel delivery. This means they can be sensitive to temperature changes, fuel quality, and long periods of inactivity.
Electronic Fuel Injection replaces the carburettors with a modern system controlled by an ECU (Engine Control Unit) — a small computer that adjusts fuel delivery in real time.
For many owners, the difference is noticeable immediately. Typical benefits include:
- Easier cold starting
- Smoother idle and throttle response
- More consistent performance in hot weather or traffic
- Reduced need for periodic carburettor tuning
Importantly, modern EFI systems can be installed in a way that remains sympathetic to the engine bay appearance, preserving the overall character of the car. For owners who want to drive their E-Type regularly, EFI can transform the day-to-day usability without losing the feel of the engine.
2. FIVE-SPEED GEARBOX CONVERSION
The original four-speed gearbox fitted to many E-Types was designed for the road conditions of the 1960s. At the time, motorway cruising speeds and traffic patterns were very different to today.
Modern five-speed conversions introduce an additional higher gear, typically referred to as an overdrive ratio. In simple terms, the engine turns fewer revolutions per minute while cruising at speed.
The result is a more relaxed driving experience, particularly on longer journeys.
Owners often report:
- Lower engine revs when cruising
- Reduced cabin noise at motorway speeds
- Improved fuel efficiency
- Smoother spacing between gear ratios
For drivers who enjoy touring in their E-Type, this upgrade can make a significant difference without altering the visual character of the car.
3. COOLING SYSTEM IMPROVEMENTS
Cooling systems are another area where modern improvements can make a noticeable difference.
Original E-Type cooling systems were engineered for the driving conditions of the 1960s. Today, cars often spend more time idling in traffic, driving in warmer climates, or using modern fuels.
Upgraded cooling systems typically involve improvements such as:
- High-efficiency aluminium radiators
- Uprated electric cooling fans
- Improved coolant flow and thermostat design
The goal is not to change the car, but to provide greater confidence when driving, particularly in heavy traffic or warm weather.
For many owners, this upgrade simply removes the anxiety of watching the temperature gauge during summer driving.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT UPGRADE
Not every E-Type needs modification. Many cars perform beautifully in original specification, particularly when maintained and driven regularly.
However, for owners who want to use their car more frequently, thoughtful upgrades can make a significant difference to how enjoyable the car is to live with.
In most cases, we start with a discussion and a workshop inspection before recommending any changes. Often these upgrades are carried out during routine servicing, engine work, or restoration projects.
The aim is always the same: Preserve the character of the E-Type while making it easier to drive and enjoy today.
