The History Of The Jaguar E-Type Series 1 (Infographic)

The Jaguar E-Type, with three series iterations spanning across its 15 years of production, is widely regarded as one of the most iconic sports cars to hail from the 60s. First introduced in 1961, the E-Type was originally based on Jaguar's D-Type racing car, the iconic bodywork and strong influence clear in each of the different E-Type Series.

The Series 1 E-type ran from March 1961 to December 1968, which was the longest production run of all three series, resulting in a total of 33,205 cars being produced.
Throughout this 7 year production period, the Series 1 E-type went through several updates and changes, both mechanical and visual. These changes were instrumental to the evolution of the Series 1 Jaguar E-Type model, that ultimately led to the reveal of the Series 2 E-Type.

The Series 1 E-Type variations

Due to these changes during the 7 years of production, there was some confusion over what constituted as a Series 1 E-Type. This resulted in the models typically falling into two categories - those made between 1961 - 1964, and those made between 1965–1967.

The models produced between 1961 - 1964, the Fixed Head Coupe and Open Two-Seater, featured 3.8-litre engines and had partial synchromesh transmissions. The earliest version of the Series 1 E-Type offered a flat floor design, which was later replaced with dished floors to provide more legroom, as well as twin bonnet latches featured on the car’s exterior. These were later moved to the inside of the car. This meant that models with the original flat floor and external bonnet latches became (and remain to be) much more valuable than other Series 1 models, due to their rarity.

The 1965–1967 models of the Fixed Head Coupe, Open Two-Seater and the new Two Plus Two had an increased engine size of 4.2 litres, as well as a fully synchronised transmission, new reclining seats, an electrical system switched to negative earth, a more reliable brake servo, and other modern amenities.
