MORE ABOUT THIS CAR...

Built in January 1962, this iconic example left the factory as the seventh right-hand drive Coupe to be fitted with dish floors after the final flat floor examples. A truly early example featuring its factory original 3.8 engine, cast stamped December 1961, making this is one of the last 3.8 engine blocks built that year. Finished in Opalescent Silver Grey over Maroon, a rare combination, with only 349 cars finished to this exact combination.

Sold through Henlys London in February 1962, the E-type was first registered to a Mr S. Norman under the registration ‘289 HYR’ which it retains. The current owner has been informed by the E-type believed to be 3rd owner, Stephen Jones, that he purchased the car from a man in Neath who had purchased it from Mr Norman. Unfortunately, the early records at the DVLC have perished but the E-types ownership history is fully documented from June 1992. Under the custodian Mr Jones of Wales, highlighted by a ‘vehicle valuation report’, the E-type was presented to be in brilliant condition, as result of “body repair and overhaul to good roadworthy condition, solid with no evidence of corrosion – applied during 1987-88.” Following this valuation, the E-type was kept in roadworthy condition maintaining its corrosion free condition.

The E-type proceeded to make its way south visiting Warminster to a Mr Eggers (1993) and then South Derbyshire to an E-type sales and restoration specialist, who sold the vehicle to a Mr Pearson of Slough, September 1995, maintaining its original London registration. Following his recent purchase, it is understood that Mr Pearson spent just short of 20 years carefully maintaining the E-type, using the example sparingly and in the final years, keeping the car off the road, resulting in a genuine and low mileage example.

2014 saw the E-type sold through a Hampshire classic car specialist for a complete restoration, the example offered a desirable base being unmolested and retaining all its original features.

Purchased by the current owner, who set out to restore the Coupe, retaining as many original factory specifications as possible, as detailed by the accompanying Jaguar Heritage Certificate. With originality as the highest priority, the tasked team set out refurbishing as many original parts as possible and carefully sourcing period-correct replacements to retain originality. After 18 months and 3,200-man hours that included a rotisserie rebuild and bare metal respray, engine rebuild and retrim, the E-type was returned to factory specification.

The E-type also retains all the original paperwork, brochures, tool kit, and Shelley Jack with handle that it left the factory with ... it is the most complete and comprehensive collection in its own right.

Today the E-type enters the market following years of meticulous maintenance with very little use. As a result of its high standard restoration, the E-type retains original features unique to early cars that make this matching numbers original right-hand drive highly sought after. Features that include a straight rear bulkhead, with only 580 cars produced with this feature, this type of rear bulkhead was later phased out in June 62' and dished cut-outs were introduced to allow for the seats to move further back by 1.5”.

While originality was the focus, the current owner added subtle upgrades to improve performance on today’s modern roads, upgrades include:
- 5-speed gearbox (original 4-speed moss box was also reconditioned and accompanies the car).
- Uprated 4 piston calipers with vented discs
- Aluminium period-correct Marston style radiator with modern fan
- Triple lace competition wire wheels.
- Stainless steel exhaust

The E-type today offers a stunning opportunity to purchase a brilliantly driveable E-type that retains the essence and soul of Jaguar’s 1960’s icon. The bodywork is presented in brilliant condition with little signs of road wear, and the same can be said for the Maroon leather interior, maintaining that rare combination. The running and performance of the E-type is second to none, the rebuilt 3.8 purrs beautifully and paired with the upgraded 5-speed gearbox, becomes highly capable on both long motorway drives and quiet windy B-roads.
