ULTIMATE STOPPING CONFIDENCE | 1962 SERIES 1 3.8 COUPÉ

PROGRAMME SUMMARY

Vehicle: 1962 Jaguar E-Type Series 1 3.8 Fixed-Head Coupé
Programme: Confident Braking
Objective: Build exceptional braking capability into the restoration, giving the owner greater stopping power, control and confidence than the original E-Type braking system could provide.
Primary Upgrades: Six-Pot Brake Calipers • Vented Drilled & Grooved Discs • High-Performance Brake Pads

THE BRIEF

From the beginning of this restoration, the owner made one priority particularly clear: the car needed to stop exceptionally well.

While the original E-Type braking system remains perfectly capable when correctly maintained, this client was open to exploring just how far braking performance could be taken as part of the wider restoration programme.

Rather than simply refurbishing the standard system, we developed a Confident Braking package around significantly greater braking capability, consistency and control.

The objective wasn't simply stronger brakes. It was to give the driver the reassurance that, when the situation demanded it, the braking system had considerably more in reserve.

PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION

With braking confidence established as a fundamental part of the build, the front braking system was developed around increased clamping force, improved heat management and high-performance friction materials.

  • Six-Pot Brake Calipers: Greater clamping capability and more controlled braking response, providing increased confidence under heavier braking.
  • Vented Drilled & Grooved Discs: Improved heat management and consistent braking performance, particularly during repeated or more demanding use.
  • High-Performance Brake Pads: Selected to complement the upgraded calipers and discs, delivering the friction performance required to make full use of the system.

Rather than treating each component as an individual upgrade, the package was specified as an integrated braking system, allowing each element to work together to deliver the level of performance the owner wanted.

THE RESULT

The difference is felt not simply in how hard the E-Type can brake, but in the confidence available through the pedal.

There is greater braking authority when required, improved resistance to heat during repeated use and a reassuring sense that the system has considerably more capability in reserve than the original specification.

Importantly, that performance doesn't change the character of the car.

It remains a beautifully restored 1962 Series 1 3.8 Coupé, but when the driver asks it to stop, the braking system responds with a level of capability better suited to modern expectations.
