THE BRIEF
For this owner, improving usability didn't mean making his E-Type feel modern.
The triple-carburettor set-up, period exhaust note and mechanical character of his Series 1 4.2 were all fundamental parts of the experience he wanted to preserve. What he wanted to remove were the areas that could undermine confidence in actually using it: concerns around temperature management, starting reliability and comfort on longer journeys.
Rather than changing everything simply because we could, the brief was to tread the line between dependable and raw – modernising the areas that mattered most to the owner while leaving the character of the car firmly intact.
PROGRAMME SPECIFICATION
The programme was deliberately selective, introducing modern engineering where it would make a meaningful difference to ownership while retaining the components responsible for much of the E-Type's traditional character.
- Performance Cooling Package: Improved temperature stability during traffic, warmer weather and longer journeys, providing greater confidence without changing the character of the engine.
- High-Torque Starting: Faster, more dependable starting, particularly when hot or after periods of inactivity.
- Air Conditioning: Modern cabin cooling to make summer driving and longer-distance touring considerably more comfortable.
- Cabin Comfort Improvements: Carefully chosen upgrades to improve time spent behind the wheel without detracting from the original character of the interior.
Importantly, the triple-carburettor induction and period exhaust system were retained, preserving the sound, response and involvement the owner considered fundamental to his Series 1.
THE RESULT
The result isn't an E-Type trying to behave like a modern car.
It remains mechanical, involving and unmistakably classic where the owner wanted it to be, but the areas that previously created hesitation have been addressed. Starting is more dependable, temperature management inspires greater confidence and the cabin is considerably more comfortable when temperatures rise.
The personality remains. The reasons to think twice about using it don't.
