Is Modified the New Original?
Traditionally, upgraded classics were less desirable. Today, the landscape tells a more nuanced story.
Once upon a time in the classic car world, “originality” was everything. Factory specification, untouched patina, matching numbers — these were the pillars of collectability. Modifications? They were often seen as compromises, relegating a vehicle to the second tier of desirability.
But today’s enthusiasts are beginning to question that long-held belief. While traditionalists may still prize originality above all, a growing number of owners — and increasingly, buyers — are drawn to classics that have been thoughtfully and tastefully upgraded for modern use. The question is: has modification truly become the new original?
THE ENTHUSIAST SHIFT
Visits to various events, modified classics are capturing the public’s imagination, it's clear that today's drivers are seeking more than showroom authenticity. They’re craving character, usability, and individuality.
At E-Type UK, we see this first-hand. Increasingly, customers are opting for upgrades that enhance both performance and practicality: a 5-speed gearbox to make motorway cruising enjoyable, electronic fuel injection for reliable starts, or LED lighting for better visibility. These aren’t vanity projects — they’re about making a beloved classic more usable in the modern world.
Does the Market Agree?
According to some recent market data by Hagerty, the picture is more complex than enthusiasts might assume. In raw numbers, sales of modified classics appear to be softening. In 2022, roughly 1 in every 5.3 cars sold was modified; so far in 2025, it’s closer to 1 in 6.9. Auction sell-through rates have also dipped for modified vehicles, dropping 5 percentage points — more than double the decline seen in their unmodified counterparts.
But here’s where context matters. That decline may not point to falling demand. Rather, it could signal that auction expectations are recalibrating after an overheated post-COVID market. In 2022, modified classics were achieving prices 24% over their low estimates — an unsustainable pace. In 2025, that figure has levelled off to 4% — a sign of realism, not rejection.
And while the average value of unmodified cars has trended downward since 2022, modified classics have actually appreciated during the same period. As ever, quality reigns supreme: the very best modified examples continue to set benchmarks. Just look at the recent run of Singer-reimagined Porsche 911s — six out of seven examples offered at auction over the past year exceeded $1 million, despite regular road use.
USABILITY & ACCEPTANCE
The real shift may be in how we define desirability. Today’s enthusiast isn’t content with a static display piece — they want a car they can use, enjoy, and rely on. Whether that’s a Volkswagen Type 2 fitted with disc brakes and LED lights, or a Series 3 E-type built to E-Type UK’s ‘Unleashed’ specification, it’s clear that practical upgrades no longer carry the stigma they once did.
Even the concours world is beginning to soften its stance. Judges often overlook safety upgrades like seatbelts, fire extinguishers, or electric cooling fans — recognising that these additions enhance longevity and safety without erasing a car’s essence.
At E-Type UK, we’ve made it our mission to preserve the spirit of the E-type while enhancing its usability for the modern driver. Through our bespoke Unleashed by E-Type UK division, we reimagine the iconic Series 3 V12 to deliver the ultimate grand tourer—blending heritage with innovation. Each Unleashed build is entirely custom to the client, featuring discreet enhancements such as modern performance upgrades, refined interiors, uprated brakes, five-speed gearboxes, and advanced cooling systems—all while honouring the E-type’s timeless silhouette. It’s a celebration of British engineering redefined for contemporary motoring, created without compromise.
EVOLUTION, NOT REJECTION
So, is “modified” the new “original”? Perhaps not in the eyes of the purist, but for a large and growing segment of the market, sympathetically modified cars represent the future of classic motoring.
Cars restored by the likes of Singer, Alfaholics, and yes — E-Type UK — attract attention and command strong prices not despite their modifications, but because of them. These are not alterations born of necessity; they are enhancements driven by passion, craftsmanship, and a desire to celebrate the car by driving it.
In a world where driving experiences matter more than data plates, where practicality and performance enhance rather than dilute appeal — we’d argue that modified isn’t the new original. It’s the new aspirational.
